Austin Emo & Screamo
Texas sincerity at two temperatures: Mineral's slow ache and Portrayal of Guilt's scorched earth.
What you're really asking
Austin's emo story runs in two chapters twenty years apart — the second-wave earnestness of Mineral in the nineties, and the blackened screamo of Portrayal of Guilt now. Different temperatures, same refusal to play it cool.
Where it sits
Mineral formed in Austin in 1994 and cut The Power of Failing — quiet-loud builds and cracked-voice confession that made them, with Sunny Day Real Estate, the sound second-wave emo is measured against.
The Gloria Record carried the melody onward after the split; Recover brought the post-hardcore muscle around 2000. Then in the late 2010s Portrayal of Guilt rebuilt Austin's name in black: screamo fused with black metal and industrial dread.
The scene
Who: Mineral and their descendants on one side, Portrayal of Guilt's circle on the other. What: emotional maximalism — whispered or shrieked, never shrugged.
How it works: the nineties records get in on feel and scarcity of original pressings; the new wave on sheer intensity.
