Detroit House

The machines keep time. The soul records tell you where you are.

What you're really asking

Listen to what happens around the beat: a voice from an old soul record, a bassline allowed to drag, a loop that stays until its meaning changes. Detroit house carries the city's Black musical memory into the club.

Sometimes rough, sometimes luxurious, rarely in a hurry to explain itself.

Where it sits

House and techno developed alongside each other in Detroit, sharing DJs, dancers and record collections. 's KDJ releases and Theo Parrish's Sound Signature gave soul, jazz and disco a particularly personal treatment.

Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman joined them in Three Chairs. Later, Omar-S's FXHE and records by Andrés opened further routes through the city.

These are overlapping circles, not a single house sound or a clean break from techno.

The scene

Who: Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite, Marcellus Pittman, Andrés, Omar-S, Delano Smith, Norm Talley and Alton Miller. Labels: KDJ, Mahogani Music, Sound Signature and FXHE.

What: repetition with grain, patient arrangements, bass with weight, samples that retain the feeling of their source. Follow the producers, collaborators and local labels; a soul sample alone does not make a record Detroit house.
