India Indie
Hindi and English songwriting outside Bollywood: festival-built bands, bedroom pop, raga-blooded rock, almost all of it streaming-first.
What you're really asking
This is not a genre, it's a distribution problem solved by bands. For fifty years film music owned the Indian airwaves, so "indie" here means any record made without a film attached — fusion rock, lo-fi balladry, Delhi lounge-psych, all of it filed together because the alternative was nothing.
The unifying fact is infrastructure: festivals, YouTube and streaming replaced the label system that never existed.
Where it sits
Bombay seeded it — Rock Machine, later Indus Creed, cut English rock records in the late 1980s. Pentagram formed in Mumbai in 1994 and carried it through the MTV years.
Indian Ocean, working out of Delhi from the early 1990s, proved a band could sell out halls playing instrumental-heavy fusion in Hindi. The 2000s built the pipes: Blue Frog opened in Mumbai in 2007, OKListen started selling independent Indian music online, and Only Much Louder launched Bacardi NH7 Weekender in Pune in 2010, which became the circuit a band could actually tour.
The Local Train, who came up through exactly that circuit — NH7 Weekender, SulaFest, Red Bull Tour Bus — released Aalas Ka Pedh in 2015. By the late 2010s overseas labels were signing Indian acts directly, and streaming playlists did the rest.
The scene
, Lifafa, Begum, Ska Vengers), Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, where When Chai Met Toast formed around vocalist Ashwin Gopakumar and guitarist Achyuth Jaigopal. What: clean guitars, piano or synth up front, lyrics flipping between Hindi, Urdu, English, Malayalam, Tamil — often inside one song.
Hooks are built for a 3,000-capacity field, not a club. How it works: there is no gatekeeper.
A band self-releases, the song lands in a web series or a film trailer, the festival booking follows, and vinyl — if it comes at all — arrives years later, usually pressed abroad.
