Italo Disco

A drum machine, an impossible romance, and a melody that follows you home.

What you're really asking

The rhythm is precise; the emotion often spills over it. Italo disco pairs electronic basslines and bright synthesizers with voices that can sound glamorous, lonely or slightly unreal.

The instrumental on the other side sometimes tells a completely different story.

Where it sits

Italian disco production was already internationally connected in the late 1970s. In the early 1980s, smaller studio projects and independent labels developed a more electronic dance sound, circulated through European distributors and compilations under the Italo disco name.

Producers, musicians and vocalists often worked across several project names. These records also travelled into American clubs: My Mine's 'Hypnotic Tango', for example, later received a Frankie Knuckles remix.

Italo's pop hits and stranger club records belong to the same infrastructure, but not one uniform aesthetic.

The scene

Who: Kano, Klein & MBO, My Mine, Charlie, Mr. Flagio, Gazebo and the producers behind them.

Labels: Discomagic, Il Discotto, Memory Records, Full Time and Mr. Disc Organization.

What: synthesizer hooks, programmed rhythm, romantic drama, vocal and instrumental versions. Use Italian production networks as the anchor; synth-pop from elsewhere is a neighbouring route, not automatically Italo.
