The Windmill Scene

One Brixton pub stage where British guitar music got strange again.

What you're really asking

You're asking about a venue as much as a sound. The Windmill in Brixton — a scruffy pub with a dog on the roof — became the petri dish where late-2010s British bands swapped post-punk, jazz chops and spoken word until something new grew.

Where it sits

From about 2016 the Windmill's open-door booking let black midi, Black Country New Road, Squid and Shame gig constantly, often on one bill. Producer Dan Carey's Speedy Wunderground label pressed the moment in one-day sessions and scarce 7-inches.

Schlagenheim in 2019 announced it; For The First Time and Bright Green Field in 2021 confirmed a generation.

The scene

Who: the Windmill's regulars, Dan Carey behind the desk, Tim Perry booking the room. What: post-punk as a starting point, then klezmer, free jazz, krautrock — whatever the room allows.

How it works: live mutation first, records later; the Speedy Wunderground singles are the scene's rarest paper.
